Interlake duo driving Nighthawks’ dominant season

Date:

Two Interlake products are playing key roles for the first-place Niverville Nighthawks this season, with both forwards ranking among the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s elite scorers.

Stonewall’s Hayden Wheddon continues to lead the league offensively. The 2005-born forward sits first overall in MJHL scoring with 79 points in 49 games, tallying 31 goals and 48 assists for a 1.61 points-per-game average. Wheddon has also contributed five game-winning goals and 16 penalty minutes while helping power a Niverville offence that leads the league in goals for.

Gimli’s Adam Vigfusson has also delivered a standout campaign. In 37 games, the 2005-born forward has recorded 23 goals and 34 assists for 57 points — good for a 1.54 points-per-game pace, placing him among the MJHL’s top 3 scorers. Vigfusson has six game-winning goals and continues to provide consistent offensive production every night.

As a team, Niverville has been nothing short of dominant. The Nighthawks lead the MGEU East Division with a 43-6-1-0 record for 87 points through 50 games. They boast a league-best .870 winning percentage, have scored 240 goals while allowing just 103, and carry an impressive +137 goal differential.

Niverville sits ahead of the Steinbach Pistons (84 points) and has already clinched a playoff berth.

The Nighthawks close out the regular season with three home games at the Niverville CRRC: Feb. 25 against the Portage Terriers (7:30 p.m.), Feb. 27 versus the Swan Valley Stampeders (7:30 p.m.) and Feb. 28 against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines (7:30 p.m.).

With first place secured and the post-season approaching, Wheddon and Vigfusson will look to keep their offensive momentum rolling as the Nighthawks prepare for what they hope will be a deep playoff run.
