The Gimli Chamber of Commerce teamed up with Gimli Access Credit Union the RM of Gimli to organize its annual volunteer street cleanup.
Volunteers picked up garbage bags and gloves at the credit union then spread out across town to pick up debris. They were given the option of cleaning up their own turf or working in an assigned zone.
The credit union provided a drop-off zone for bags of garbage and offered hotdogs and refreshments to the volunteers as a way to thank them for their time.
Chamber president Samantha Hampton said the event showed how people in Gimli care about their community.
“Community pride starts at street level. When people care enough to show up with garbage bags, gloves and a few hours of their time, it sends a powerful message about the kind of community Gimli is,” said Hampton.
Volunteers removing waste from the streets show more than pride: they’re supporting local businesses, tourism, community well-being and a sense of connection, she added.
“It was incredible to see residents, families, businesses and volunteers sharing their cleanup efforts online and taking genuine pride in where they live,” said Hampton.
She said the chamber is especially grateful to Access Credit Union for stepping forward “in such a meaningful way” and helping turn the initiative in a true community-wide effort.
Westshore Community Foundation’s vice-president Romanna Klymkiw took part in the cleanup, saying she and other board members wanted to contribute to the Gimli community.
“The Westshore Community Foundation is a proud member of the Gimli Chamber of Commerce, and Access Credit Union has been a long-time supporter of ours,” said Klymkiw. “We’re happy to do our part to help keep our community clean and beautiful. This has become an annual outing for members of Westshore’s board and we always look forward to it.”
