Olympic-themed fun at Stonewall library

Date:

Stonewall library is embracing the Olympic spirit throughout February for I Love to Read Month.

Branch librarian Joan Ransom said their theme this year is “Be a Gold Medal Read-er.”

“We have Olympic fever! Our branch is decorated with multiple sets of Olympic rings (made out of hula hoops), large informational posters about the summer and winter Olympics, a giant gold medal hanging from the ceiling — and we have even made a huge Olympic torch with realistic looking fake flames power by a fan,” she said.

“We have a ‘guess the number of Olympic rings’ contest where kids can guess the number of lifesavers in a jar. The person who guesses closest will win the jar and some books. We have a draw for adults as well — they can enter to win a collection of novels, all of which have a book or library theme.”

The fun continues at the local library with an Olympic sports scavenger hunt and an Olympic-themed colouring station.

“We are so happy to have partnered with our friends at Something Beautiful Café as they have generously donated 50 treats for readers. The staff there have baked, packaged and tagged tasty cookies for lucky readers. We have hidden 50 gold medal coupons in books around the library, and readers who find one and sign the title out can redeem the coupon at Something Beautiful for a sweet treat,” Ransom said.

“We are so thankful for their community participation in this I Love to Read activity, and we know how much our readers love having a treat for being great ‘gold med-al’ readers. We invite everyone to stop by the library for some Olympic fun.”
