Riverton restaurant earns awards for La Poutine Week

Date:

A Riverton restaurant created a mouth-watering entry for La Poutine Week and drew praise from its customers. The rest is just gravy — including the eatery’s nationwide accolades for its efforts.

From Feb. 1 to 7, diners had the chance to cast online votes in the Canada-wide annual event called La Poutine Week, allowing restaurants nationwide to create one-of-a-kind entries.

Kahleigh’s Brew Barn, located at 40 Main St. in Riverton, deconstructed its Brew Barn Burger for a culinary concoction called Brew Burger Poutine. The ooey, gooey option featured fries topped with ground beef from Arborg, cheddar cheese, gravy, bacon crumble, tomato, pickles, lettuce and homemade burger sauce.

It proved to be a popular pick since it ranked No. 1 in Manitoba and No. 3 across all of Canada.

“I was shocked to see us in the Top 5,” said owner Kahleigh Dubois. “They did not show the leaderboard, so we had no idea we were placing that high in La Poutine Week. We are so thrilled we were able to be in the Top 5 for all of Canada.”

Plenty of locals tried out the prize-winning poutine, as well as some customers who travelled from Winnipeg and surrounding areas.

“Lots said it was better than last year’s entries and were sure it would be a winner,” Dubois said.

“We are so grateful for our community who supported us and took the time to rate our poutine. Riverton has always been home, and it feels good to keep this place on the map and bring people into our beautiful little community.”

Dubois hasn’t decided yet if Brew Burger Poutine will be added as a permanent menu item, but the restaurant extended the offering for a few extra days in case anyone hadn’t had the chance to try it yet.

And this isn’t the first time the Riverton restaurant has earned accolades for its stand-out food.

“We received the Stone Soup Award for having the best soup in Interlake-Eastern region in 2022,” Dubois said. “We did a lasagna soup, and $1 from each bowl sold was donated to local breakfast programs for children.”

Coming up soon, Kahleigh’s Brew Barn will enter Potato Week for the first time ever. Peak of the Market will put on the event, which runs from March 1 to 10.

“I am going to be using a recipe I use often at home for my family and I’m super excited for everyone to try it,” Dubois said.

“We use McCain’s fries at the Brew Barn, which are Manitoba-grown potatoes. We will use Manitoba-grown during Potato Week as well.”

Kahleigh’s Brew Barn is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Visit www.kahleighsbrewbarn.ca to learn more about the Riverton restaurant.
