Van Assen on top of the podium at Provincials

Date:

Kirk Van Assen, representing Dufferin Christian School (DCS), came out on top in the Varsity Boys Pentathlon event at the MHSAA Track and Field Provincials, which took place at the University of Manitoba over the weekend. He proudly took home the gold medal for his outstanding performance.

Throughout the meet, Van Assen consistently improved his rankings in each of the five pentathlon events. He placed 17th in the 100m with a time of 12.75 seconds, followed by third place in shot put with a distance of 11.03m. His performance continued to impress as he secured second place in high jump with a height of 1.75m and long jump with a distance of 5.69m. The final event, the 800m, saw Van Assen take first place with an impressive time of 2:13.28 seconds.

In order to qualify for the provincial competition, Van Assen finished first in theZone IV Pentathlon held May 28 and 29 at GVC in Winkler.

Last year Van Assen placed 9th overall in the Varsity Boys Provincial Pentathlon event, where he also placed first in the 800m event. In addition to improving to a first place finish this year, he showed improved performance for four of the five events. With less than a week of classes remaining for the grade 12 student, his gold medal at provincials is a suitable finish to his participation in Stingers Athletics at DCS, where he has participated in and significantly contributed to the soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, and track and field teams this year.

Van Assen expressed his appreciation to coaches Elsie Jordaan, Hentie Jordaan, Marcy Vandenbos, and Kevin Voorhorst for their hard work and dedication to the Track and Field program at DCS.
