Rams honour athletes accomplishments at 2024 Sports Awards

Date:

College Stonewall Collegiate held their annual Sports Awards at the school Thursday morning.

Over 50 athletes received awards honouring their accomplishments from the 2023-24 season.

Ashley Hudon was named Varsity Female Athlete of the Year for her volleyball and basketball season.

Spencer Schaeffer was named Varsity Male Athletes of the Year for his baseball, volleyball, badminton, basketball, and cross-country seasons.

Lucy Hoff was named Junior Varsity Female Athlete of the Year after competing in volleyball, cross country, softball, and track & field.

After competing in track, rugby, and volleyball, Nathaniel Greenidge was named Junior Varsity Male Athlete of the Year.

“It’s nice to recognize kids who put in the time and effort and really care about the school community,” said Curtis Grieve, who coached multiple CSC teams this season.

This year, the Rams had multiple provincial teams, and individual athletes attended provincials in their respective sports.

Grieve said one of their goals is to allow the students to play in a wide variety of sports.

This year, CSC had multiple teams in 12 different sports and even started a male rugby team after the students expressed interest.

With so many clubs, CSC saw graduated athletes come back to coach, volunteers, and teachers coaching teams throughout the season.

“We have no shortage of staff members stepping up and doing a lot of work,” said Grieve. “Community members and recent graduates also helped with volleyball, badminton, basketball, and rugby. We’re fortunate in who the coaches are and have good people doing good things.”

The event was also an opportunity to thank parents who helped make attending games after school and on weekends.

He said over 150 people were in attendance, including athletes, coaches, parents, and grandparents, to honour the season it was.

“The kids put in a lot of work,” said Grieve. “When you think about some of our grade 12’s who have been on multiple teams over the years. It’s seven a.m. practices, being on the bus through COVID, getting parents to find rides for them, and going away on weekends for tournaments. It’s a little bit of showing that we’re proud of what they do and how they represented our school. It’s a great group of student athletes. Typically, they are the ones going the extra mile in the building.”
