Cozying up with a good book

A fun-filled month of reading

Principal Scott Hiebert says students and staff at École Elmwood School are having a lot of fun celebrating I Love to Read Month.

“Every February, to celebrate, our Home and School Association puts on the read-a-thon, so the halls and classrooms are filled with fun decorations to promote literacy. This year it was a Camp theme, which is why we have a ‘fire’ in the library. Kids have really loved that.”

Hiebert adds that the read-a-thon is a great way to promote reading at home, and an opportunity for students to do some fundraising.

“We have Stop, Drop and Reads throughout the month. We had a fun one where the minute we turned off the lights, they had to read by flashlight or glow stick, which was really exciting for the kids.”

There have also been a number of guest readers at the school, including the French Immersion students from W.C. Miller Collegiate, and some staff members from Friesens Corporation.

Working together with Regional Connections, they also have parents reading to the students in a variety of languages.

“We’ve done that a few times, and it’s a really interesting experience for the kids.”

The fun-filled month will culminate with a book fair, where students can purchase their own books, and on March 1, they’ll wrap up the festivities with a pancake brunch with the students at W.C. Miller Collegiate.
