The U17 Central Energy squad split its doubleheader on Sunday afternoon to improve to 11-5-1, which is good for second place in the Manitoba Premier Softball League (MPSL) standings.
In the first game of the doubleheader, U17 Central Energy defeated the Manitoba Angels by a 3-0 score. Nelia Fehr started the game pitching for U17 Central Energy and recorded 21 outs.
Fehr struck out 11 batters on the day and allowed just two hits and zero runs over seven innings while walking one. Molly Conrad also hit a solo home run to left field for the winning run for Central Energy.
U17 Central Energy could get nothing going in the second game of the day as they got walloped 11-1 by the Eastman Wildcats.
Gabrielle Hildebrand stepped into the pitching circle first for U17 Central Energy. She gave up seven hits and six runs (one earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking one. Central Energy’s lone run was in the top of the sixth on a solo home run to center field by Maddy Friesen.
“Our first game against the Angels was a great game for the pitchers from both teams,” said U17 Central Energy coach Cam Zacharias.
“In the next game, we just had no hitting. They hit well, and we didn’t. I would say that their pitching wasn’t even tough, as we just had an off day with the bats.”
U17 Central Energy’s MPSL regular season is now complete, and they will head to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for a tournament at the beginning of July. From there, they will participate in the Manitoba provincials, where they hope to qualify for the Nationals with a top-two finish.
The U15 Central Energy team won both games of its doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Their offence exploded against the Winnipeg Lightning, winning 10-2 and 14-1.
“The bats were just on fire today right from the beginning of each game,” said U15 Central Energy coach Kevin Perrin. “We had six runs in the first inning of the first game and nine runs in the first inning of game two. So it was a great day for our team.”
U15 Central Energy will be back in MPSL action with a doubleheader on July 2 against the Interlake Phillies at the Republic of Manitobah Diamond. The game times are 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.
The U13 Central Energy team split its doubleheader on Saturday as they lost the first game 7-1 to the Manitoba Angels, but won a close 2-1 barnburner with the Eastman Wildcats. The next day on Sunday wasn’t too kind for U13 Central Energy as they lost both games of its doubleheader with the Eastman Wildcats by 9-2 and 10-3 scores.
U13 Central Energy’s June 28 doubleheader against the Interlake Phillies was postponed due to rain and will be rescheduled in the future. With their MPSL season complete, U13 Central Energy will now be prepping for Provincials, where they hope to qualify for Nationals.
