Royals hand out 2023-24 Athletics Awards

The Lord Selkirk Royals wrapped up their sports season with their annual Athletics Awards Breakfast Banquet on June 4.

Over 40 awards were handed out in the school’s cafeteria that morning as the Royals celebrated the accomplishments of their student athletes from the 2023-24 Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association season.

The Athletes of the Year Awards were handed out to four of the Royals biggest standouts who represented the Royals at the highest level in their sports.

Madilyn Freiter was named the Female Varisty Athlete of the Year. She was a standout in volleyball and soccer this season.

Parker Carels was named the Male Varsity Athlete of the Year. He participated in hockey, cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track this year.

Delainey Kiteley was named Keystone Female Junior Varisty Athlete of the Year for her impressive season in hockey, basketball, and lacrosse.

Nolan Dear was named Keystone Male Varsity Junior Varisty Athlete of the Year for his season in volleyball, hockey, and outdoor track.

The Royals also handed out the Team Most valuable Player Awards for each individual sports team, and their Scholar Athletes of the Year for athletes who played multiple sports while maintaining an overall grade average of 85 per cent or better.

• Award of Recognition: “For contributions to the Royals Athletic Program” – Dheklin Monkman

The Royals also handed out the Jim Schreyer Leadership Award to Hannah Niemi and the Success at the National Level Award to Owen Giesbrecht and Liberty Aime.

Athletic Director Scott Gurney said the 2023-24 season was a special one for the breadth of quality and success across the athletic programs. 

He added that the group of graduating athletes has been especially supportive of each other and have great team chemistry.
